Andy Murray committed to AEGON
From its inaugural year, there have been six players to finish the Queen’s Club-Wimbledon title double in the same year, including John McEnroe (81, 84), Jimmy Connors (82), Boris Becker (85), Pete Sampras (95, 99), Lleyton Hewitt (2002) and Rafael Nadal (2008). In 2011, Andy Murray was the first two time British champion since Francis Gordon Lowe (1913-14, ’25).
Defending champion Andy Murray (World #4) has recently focused on the AEGON Championships for the next five years, making certain he’ll be playing at the match in his 30th year. Murray burst onto the picture at The Queen’s Club in 2005 as an 18-year-old, earning his first professional matches and then losing a fascinating next round clash with the former Australian Open champion, Thomas Johansson.
Murray has since gained the subject twice, in 2009 and 2011.
‘Ever since I got my first ATP World Tour match-win at the match seven years back, I have always loved enjoying at The Queen’s Club,’ said Murray. ‘I’ve won the contest twice, and I’m getting excited about trying to win it many more times in the years to come.’
Bob Kermode, Tournament Director of the AEGON Championships, said:
‘For Andy to agree to the AEGON Championship for the next five years on the same time as we mention the expansion of our host broadcaster agreement with the BBC for the same length, is excellent news for the match. Andy is widely popular with our spectators and I know they will be as happy as we’re to welcome him back to The Queen’s Club until at the very least, 2016 ‘.
