Annual Citi Open Prepares For Return In Late July

The Citi Open will be on it’s way to the nation’s capitol again, and tennis fans will be flocking in to see the world’s best in action. This year, the tournament will be offering approximately $1.6 million in total commitment payoffs and will be held from July 26th through August 3rd at the Fitzgerald Tennis Center. Tickets can be purchased here. Last year’s winner Juan Martin del Potro made it his third Citi Open win in his career with runner up John Isner. The women’s winner was Magdalena Rybarikova, making it her second victory in succession. Runner up for the women’s tournament was Andrea Petkovic.

The Citi Open tournament is part of the Emirates Airlines US Open Series and is one of eleven ATP World Tour 500 level events worldwide. It is one of the top 20 tournaments in the world on the ATP World Tour 500 and is the only one held here in the United States. The tournament started out in 1969 known as the Washington Star International from 1969 through 1981, then changed to the Sovran Bank Classic in 1982 to 1992, the Washington Open from 1993 to 1994, then the Legg Mason Tennis Classic from 1994 through 2011. The women’s tournament started in 2011 in Maryland as the Citi Open and then merged with the ATP to Washington, DC, for a joint tournament.
