Serena Williams Beaten by Sabine Lisicki
Sabine Lisicki, the German seeded No. 23 player, astonished everyone at the Wimbledon Open by defeating Serena Williams in the fourth round on Monday. The win has put a stop to the five-time champion’s winning streak of 34 straight matches won.
“I just was fighting for every single point no matter what was happening out there,” Lisicki said. “Serena’s a very tough player. That’s why she is No. 1 in the world. I’m just so glad that I could pull off the win.”
Serena was not completely surprised at the lose as Lisicki was playing so well. “I don’t think it’s a huge shock,” Williams said of the outcome. “She is a great player. Her ranking has no effect on what she should be. She should be ranked higher. She just has a super, super game to play well on grass.”
The final score was 6-2, 1-6, 6-4. Prior to beating Williams, Lisicki beat Svetlana Kuznetsova, Li Na and Maria Sharapova.
