Ernests Gulbis wins 2013 Delray Beach International Tennis Championships
Ernests Gulbis defeated Edouard Roger-Vasellin in straight sets to win the 2013 Delray Beach International Tennis Championships. The match-up featured both players who were ranked outside the top 100, Gulbis (109) and Roger-Vasellin (105). This sort of match-up hasn’t happened since 2007 in Houston.
Gulbis also won the event back in 2010, and is the first qualifier to win since Jarkko Nieminen did it in Sydney back in January 2012. To win, Gulbis beat the tournament’s second overall seed Tommy Haas in the semifinals, and also defeated the third seed Sam Querrey in the second round. It was Roger-Vasellin’s first finals appearance in his tennis career, and the first time he has played past the quarterfinals at any ATP event.
