Serena Williams Wins Wimbledon Title
Serena Williams won her last Grand Slam Title at the 2010 Wimbledon. The last two years have been a medical
nightmare for her which started with stepping on broken glass in July of 2010, having two surgeries, battling
to recover from that injury. Then in February, 2011, Serena was diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism where she
then developed a hematoma on her abdomen the size of a grapefruit. The hematoma had to be drained and for the
next three weeks, she had a drain apparatus in her navel. Serena says, “I didn’t think I’d play tennis again. I just wanted to make it out of the hospital. I wasn’t even thinking about tennis; I was thinking about family and thinking about just making it out of that moment. That’s when you realize you have perspectives about life and your career.”
Serena healed physically and returned to pro tennis in June 2011. It has been a rollercoaster ride for the last year
but has somehow made a great comeback.
On Saturday, Serena beat Agnieszka Radwanska of Poland, 6-1, 5-7, 6-2, to win her fifth Wimbledon title, making this
her fourteenth major title. Amazingly, she and her sister Venus, won the doubles tournament on the same day against
Hlavackova/Hradecka 7-5, 6-4.
